Rome is one of the busiest gateway cities for Mediterranean cruising, largely thanks to the port of Civitavecchia about an hour outside the city, which serves as the embarkation point for a large share of Mediterranean itineraries. If you’re sailing out of Civitavecchia, it’s worth building in at least a day or two in Rome itself beforehand — the Colosseum, the Forum, and the Vatican Museums are not the kind of sights you want to rush between transfers.

Because so many Mediterranean cruises route through this port, availability and pricing can shift quite a bit by season — late spring and early fall tend to offer a good balance of weather and lower crowds compared to peak summer.
