The Real Cost of a Week in Costa Rica

Costa Rica gets marketed as an affordable tropical destination, and compared to, say, a luxury Caribbean resort trip, it can be. But the actual cost structure surprises a lot of first-time visitors, mostly because of one thing: internal transportation.

Domestic Flights and Transfers Are the Hidden Cost

Costa Rica’s regions — the Central Valley, the Pacific coast, the Caribbean coast, the northern volcano region — are further apart in travel time than the map suggests, thanks to mountainous terrain and limited direct roads. A common mistake is planning to see three or four regions in a week without accounting for the 3-5 hour shuttle rides (or costlier domestic flights) between them. Picking two regions instead of four, and spending real time in each, is usually the better trip and the better budget.

Accommodation Swings Wildly by Type

A basic cabina or hostel can run quite cheap, while an eco-lodge with all-inclusive meals and guided excursions can run resort-level prices for the same nights. Costa Rica doesn’t really have one “typical” nightly rate — it has several tiers that don’t overlap much, so pin down which tier you’re actually booking before estimating a week’s total.

Guided Excursions Add Up Fast

A lot of what people come to Costa Rica for — zip-lining, guided hikes into cloud forests, wildlife-spotting boat tours — are bookable add-ons, not included in a typical lodging rate. If your trip centers on 3-4 of these kinds of activities, budget for them as a separate, meaningful line item rather than an afterthought.

What Actually Is Cheap

Local food (a “casado” plate at a soda, the local no-frills restaurants) is genuinely inexpensive and good. Public buses between closer towns are cheap if you have the time flexibility. And a lot of the country’s best experiences — waterfalls, beaches, national park entry fees — are low-cost or modest compared to the transportation and lodging that surrounds them.
